Day 1: INTRODUCTION TO SANDPLAY: WORDS AND SYMBOLS
This first day of a four day series (each day can stand on its own) explores the history and lineage of using sandplay in psychotherapy, including the influence of Dora Kalff, Carl G. Jung, Play Theory, and Humanistic Elements. We will examine the answer to the often asked question regarding the difference between sandtray and sandplay. Participants will learn the different paths one might take to deepen their study, depending on the interest and need.
This training is experiential focused so that participants can experience the sand as builders and holders. We will examine and identify elements of how to “hold the space safely”. Identification of the tools and rationale for using sandplay will close the day. It is our hope to instigate an interest in sandplay and an understanding of its power to move psychotherapeutic process.
Day 2: INTRODUCTION TO SANDPLAY: BASIC THEORETICAL CONCEPTS
A wonderful exploration of basic Jungian concepts such as Individuation, Ego, Archetype, Complex, and Psyche and their relevance to the sandplay. Some focus on the concept of Transference/Counterfransference and its relevance to the therapy process. The day will continue to build on “holding space” and will examine the use of water in the sandplay work. Focus on experiential learning.
Day 3: INTRODUCTION TO SANDPLAY: DEEPER IN
Exploration deepens into the roots of Sandplay as developed by Dora Kalff including theoretical elements, the goal of therapy and the role of the therapist. Exploration will also include the role Tibetan Buddhism had in influencing Sandplay. We examine the role of symbols and the views of teachers (Jung, Kalff, Weinrib).
A brief overview of the processes of sandplay including the Hero/Heroine’s Journey, the Labyrinth, and the Alchemical Process to instigate the understanding of the depth of the work. A case presentation captures some of these elements.
Day 4: INTRODUCTION TO SANDPLAY: CHILDREN AND FAMILY CONCEPTS
A day of exploring the specific use of sandplay with children, families, and couples or small groups. A playful end to the intensive while exploring theoretical and developmental elements that are relevant to work with children and families. A final group play process ends the day.
